Murray State College has been selected as one of 170 organizations serving 48 Oklahoma communities to share in $3 million from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act made available to the arts and cultural sector by Oklahoma Governor J. Kevin Stitt.  Grants were approved by the Oklahoma Arts Council board during their December meeting to organizations with arts-based missions that serve geographically isolated areas, under-resourced communities, culturally diverse populations, and underrepresented groups.

The one-time grants were available statewide to nonprofit arts and cultural organizations, museums, historical societies, colleges and universities, public libraries, tribal nations, and departments of city and county governments that present arts programming.

Murray State will receive a grant of $13, 000 to be used toward eligible expenses resulting from the pandemic including payroll for staff, distance learning, interruption of business, personal protective equipment, and other public safety measures.

“We are pleased to have been selected for financial assistance by the Oklahoma Arts Council.  Our arts education and cultural programs, under the direction of Susan Yeager, will most certainly benefit students and provide access to the arts during these difficult times,” said MSC President Joy McDaniel.

Arts-based and creative performance programs by their very nature bring people together.  Since the pandemic began, most performances and exhibitions have been postponed or canceled causing Oklahoma’s creative sector to be disproportionately affected by the pandemic.  College education has continued, but funding to support these efforts is extremely important.

“These grant awards are a meaningful part of what we hope will be a commitment by state leaders to assuring the long-term health of the state arts sector as it fights to bounce back from the pandemic,” said OAC Executive Director Amber Sharples.

Murray State College will reopen on January 4, 2021 to class for the spring semester beginning on January 19, 2021.  For more information on enrollment, visit mscok.edu or call 580-387-7000.
