In anticipation of kicking off the fall 2020 semester, Murray State College Athletics has announced the hiring of Tori Vazquez as head women’s soccer coach and Edgar Gonzaga as head coach for men’s soccer.

Vazquez comes to Murray from Plainview, Texas where she previously held the position of Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach for three years at Wayland Baptist University of the NAIA. While at WBU, three players received All-Conference awards and in the 2019-20 season the Pioneers achieved their best finish in program history by beating a nationally ranked competitor to reach the conference final.

In addition to her college coaching experience, Vazquez has coached at the youth level for multiple clubs in and around the San Antonio area and holds a U.S. Soccer Federation class D coaching license. Prior to coaching, she competed on multiple youth soccer clubs which lead to playing on the college level at Our Lady of the Lake University of the NAIA.  At Lady of the Lake, she was a first team all-conference player four years straight. Following her collegiate career, Vazquez played overseas in both Spain and Iceland.

Vazquez holds a B.A. in English and Philosophy from Our Lady of the Lake University, a M.S. in Sport Management from Texas Woman’s University, and is currently working toward a PhD in Management from Wayland Baptist University.

Edgar Gonzaga takes the reigns of the Murray State College Men’s Soccer Program after serving as the first men’s soccer coach at Waldorf University in Forest City, Iowa. He led the Warriors to an Association of Independent Institutions (AII) Conference Title and a trip to the NAIA National Tournament in 2017. While at Waldorf, he also coached two Conference Newcomers of the Year, one Conference Offensive Player of the Year and a Defensive Player of the Year as well as a Conference Goalkeeper of the Year. In addition, he helped guide 13 first team all-conference players, 14 second team all-conference players, 12 conference players of the week, and one NAIA Defensive Player of the Week. In the classroom, the team maintained a 3.0 GPA with 12 Academic Conference Awards, three NAIA Scholar Athletes, and six Champions of Characters.

A Dallas native, Gonzaga graduated from Northeastern State University with a B.S. in Health/Human Performance in 2014 and a M.A. in Organizational Leadership/Sports Management from Waldorf University in 2017. He played three years at Northeastern State University where he earned MIAA Conference Honors, MIAA Academic Honor Roll, participated in the MIAA Conference Tournament and made a NCAA National Tournament appearance. Gonzaga also played with the Tulsa Athletic of the National Premier Soccer League in the summer of 2014.

Following the NJCAA's recent announcement to delay fall sports seasons, Murray State soccer teams expect to begin competitive play in the Spring.  Visit the mscok.edu website for updates.
