Before you do the readings and view the presentation below, please be advised of the following:

1.      In this section you will complete and submit your seventh written assignment.  You MUST follow the Submission Procedure outlined on the Web 1113 Home Page.

2.      The written assignment for Module 8 (Paper 7) is a critical analysis of a piece of writing.  It should be written in a formal style.  There should be an introduction,  a conclusion, and a separate body paragraph for the Primary Aim and the Dominant Mode.  You will need to do a Works Cited page for Paper 7.

3.      The first step in completing Paper 7 is to choose an essay from the group at the back of the packet.  Determine the essay's Primary Aim and Dominant Mode.  Then use the general characteristics of the Primary Aim and the characteristics of the Dominant Mode as the criteria for your critical evaluation.

4.      If you have questions about  formal essay style, please see the review of sentence and paragraph structure on the Web 1113 Home Page.

NOTE 1: Module 8 is the final required Module for Web 1113. Once your Paper 7 has been submitted and marked "Accepted," you have earned a grade of "C" in the course.  You may choose to keep this grade rather than going on to Module 9 and writing Paper 8 (to get a "B" or an "A").

NOTE 2: If you wish to stop with Module 8 and take a grade of "C" please inform your instructor in the E-mail message to which you attach Paper 7.

NOTE 3: Your Paper 6 must be returned marked "Accepted" before you can submit Paper 7.

NOTE 4: Remember: you may submit only one (1) essay per day.  This is true even on the last day to turn in work for the class.

  ASSIGNMENT

Paper 7

1.      To begin, you must pick an essay from the “Essays for Further Reading and Analysis” section on pages 91-106 of the Course Packet.  Then you must analyze that essay.  First, determine the Primary Aim and the Dominant Mode of the target essay.  Next, use the general characteristics of the Primary Aim and the characteristics of the Dominant Mode as the criteria for your critical evaluation.

2.      Finally, once you have put together a good topic outline, write a formal essay of at least five hundred (500) words using the Referential Aim and the Mode of Evaluation.

3.      This critical analysis will be written using Formal MLA Documentation Style, including parenthetical quote and paraphrase citations, as well as a Works Cited page.

4.      Your Works Cited page will contain only one entry: the entry for the target essay that you chose from the Packet.  Use the cover sheet of the Packet, and the target essay, for the information necessary to do your Work Cited entry.  Page citations in Paper 7 should be made using Packet page numbers (the big numbers at the top right hand corner of each page).

5.      Because this is a Referential Aim essay, it must be comprehensive - that is, talk about all four of the general characteristics of the Primary Aim, and the characteristics of the Dominant Mode.

6.      Follow the suggested pattern on pages 85-86 of the Packet.  Your essay should contain an introduction and a conclusion and two body paragraphs.  The information in these paragraphs should be exactly the same as the information contained in the paragraphs of the suggested pattern on pages 85-86.

7.      Also, read each of the sample student essays on pages 86-91 of the Packet carefully.  Use them as models for your own essay.  The only difference between the sample student essays and your Paper 7 is that you must cite your quotes and do a Work Cited page.

8.      Remember: all you are doing is talking about how effectively the writer of the essay you have chosen uses the Aims and Modes in this particular piece of writing.

NOTE: Paper 7 must be submitted and marked "Accepted" before you move on to Module 9.
