Before you do the readings and view the presentation below, please be advised of the following:

1.      In this section you will complete and submit your sixth written assignment.  You MUST follow the Submission Procedure outlined on the Web 1113 Home Page.

2.      The written assignment for Module 7 (Paper 6) is a formal classification essay.  It should be written in a formal style.  There should be an introduction, a conclusion, and a separate body paragraph for each category of your topic.  You need at least three categories for Paper 6.  You will need to do an MLA Style Works Cited page for Paper 6.

3.      The first step in completing Paper 6 is to come up with a topic to fit the assignment.  As you read the text and view the presentation here in Module 7, you should be thinking about possible topics for Paper 6.

4.      If you have questions about  formal essay style, please see the review of sentence and paragraph structure on the Web 1113 Home Page.

NOTE: Your Paper 5 must be returned marked "Accepted" before you can submit Paper 6.

  ASSIGNMENT

Paper 6

1.      First you must pick a topic.  Next you must limit that topic to between three and seven categories which are comprehensive.  The best way to verify that you've covered all the categories included in your topic is to access Google.com and do a subject search for your topic.  For example, you might do a subject search for "firearms types" to verify that you've covered all your bases.  Finally, you must submit that topic to your instructor for approval.

2.      Your topic approval request MUST include a list of the categories that you propose to divide your topic into.

3.      Then, once your topic has been approved, write a formal essay of at least one thousand (1000) words using the Referential Aim and the Mode of Classification (as an example, see the sample Paper 6 on pages 60-61 of the Course Packet).

4.      This formal classification essay will be written using Formal MLA Documentation Style, including parenthetical quote and paraphrase citations, as well as a Works Cited page and a thesis statement that contains all of your categories.

5.      Because this is a Referential Aim essay, it must be comprehensive - that is, talk about all the classes/categories of the topic you choose.  This may involve further limiting of your topic once research and/or writing has begun.

6.      Remember: for Paper 6 you should take a group of things, divide it up into subgroups, and relate the subgroups to each other.  For example you could divide firearms up into rifles, shotguns, pistols, and automatic weapons (notice that these four categories are comprehensive; they talk about all the kinds of firearms).

7.      You will need to do research to give background information about your topic, as well as specific facts and examples for each of your categories.  You must have at least five (5) sources.   They can be all electronic, or all text-based, or a mix of the two.

8.      You must do a separate Works Cited page with an MLA Style entry for each source you quote or paraphrase.  You must quote or paraphrase a source in order to include it on your works cited page.  A handy rule of thumb is to use at least one - and not more than three - quotes and/or paraphrases per body paragraph.

9.      It is best to print up electronic source information.  That way if a website is updated and/or information is deleted, you have a copy of what you need.  Also, printing up your electronic sources should give you the information you need to do your Works Cited entries (author, title, address, hit date, date of last update, etc).

10.  Each of your Internet-based Works Cited entries MUST contain the following information, at minimum: the title of the article, the name of the website, the copyright date or date of last update, the date you accessed the page, and the web address for the article.

11. If you cannot find the above required information necessary to do a Work Cited entry for an electronic source (see St. Martin's, page 758-760 for examples), then you MAY NOT use that source in your Paper 6.  There will be no exceptions.

12.  Remember: this formal classification research paper assignment is the biggest of the eight papers you will do this semester.  It will take a little bit longer than the others.  Don't get frustrated.

13.  Pages 60-61 of the Course Packet contain an example of an actual student essay that was accepted for this assignment.  Pages 772-779 of the St. Martin's Guide contain a sample research paper that integrates both text-based and web-based quotes and paraphrases.  This sample research paper also features a detailed Works Cited page with both text-based and web-based entries.

NOTE: Paper 6 must be submitted and marked "Accepted" before you move on to Module 8.
