  ASSIGNMENT

Paper 5

1.      Write a formal essay of at least five hundred (500) words using the Persuasive Aim and the Mode of Compare and Contrast.

2.      Use alternation of detail.

3.      You should have at least three (3) body paragraphs for this assignment - one for each point of comparison, in keeping with the use of alternation of detail.

4.      You may compare and contrast any two kinds of things, as long as they belong to the same general class or category (for example Chevy vs. Ford trucks, apple vs. blueberry pie, mothers vs. fathers, etc).

5.      Do not compare and contrast individual things (for example your brother John vs. your brother Bob).  Individual people or things should be used as examples of the class they are members of (for example brothers), not as categories in and of themselves.

6.      You need to come up with at least three (3) points of comparison.  For instance you might compare and contrast Ford and Chevy trucks on the basis of looks, price, and durability.  Each point of comparison must be developed in a separate body paragraph.

7.      Your claim for this assignment is simply a one-sentence statement of which thing is better and why (the why being your points of comparison).  For instance your thesis might be: Ford trucks beat Chevy because they look better, are cheaper, and last longer.  Your claim must contain your points of comparison.

8.      Remember: because this assignment is to be written using the Persuasive Aim, you do not need to be comprehensive.  That is, you do not need to cover all aspects of the two things you are comparing and contrasting.  Choose the three or four or five best points of comparison.

NOTE: Paper 5 must be submitted and marked "Accepted" before you move on to Module 7.
