Before you do the readings and view the presentation below, please be advised of the following:

1.      In this section you will complete and submit your third written assignment.  You MUST follow the Submission Procedure outlined on the Web 1113 Home Page.

2.      The written assignment for Module 4 (Paper 3) is a formal essay.  It should be written in a formal style.  There should be an introduction and a conclusion and a separate body paragraph for each support of your claim.  Paper 3 must contain an underlined claim.  Again, you MUST underline your claim for Paper 3.  However, you will not need to do a Works Cited page for Paper 3.

3.      If you have questions about  formal essay style, please see the review of sentence and paragraph structure on the Web 1113 Home Page.

NOTE:  Your Paper 2 must be returned marked "Accepted" before you can submit Paper 3.

  ASSIGNMENT

Paper 3

1.      Write a position paper of at least five hundred (500) words using the Persuasive Aim and the tools of argumentation.

2.      A position paper is a written argument which addresses only one side of an issue.  Editorials found in newspapers and magazines are examples of position papers.

3.      Unlike the editorials found in newspapers and magazines, your argument must meet certain standards.  Please see the Issue List below for a list of approved topics.  Papers which address a topic not on the Issue List will not be accepted.

4.      Your introduction must contain a clearly defined claim (a one-sentence statement of your position on the issue) which is underlined.  You must have at least three supports for your claim.  Each support, whether direct (facts, examples, testimonials) or motivational (personal experience, statistics, appeals), must be developed in a separate body paragraph.   Your conclusion must contain a re-statement of your claim and a summary of your support.

5.      Remember: your purpose in writing Paper 3 is to convince the reader that your stand on the issue is correct.

NOTE: Paper 3 must be submitted and marked "Accepted" before you move on to Module 5.

  1. Manned Spaceflight: Should the U.S. send a manned mission to Mars?

  2. War in Iraq: Should the U.S. pull out now?

  3. Energy: Should the U.S. aggressively seek to develop renewable energy?

NOTE: You MUST use one of the above topics for your Paper 3.  If you would like to write over some other topic, you MUST get your instructor's approval BEFORE you submit your Paper 3.
