Before you do the readings and view the presentation below, please be advised of the following:

  1. In this section you will complete and submit your first written assignment.  You MUST follow the Submission Procedure outlined on the Web 1113 Home Page.

  2. The written assignment for Module 2 (Paper 1) is an informal essay.  It should be written in a conversational style (sound like the way you talk).

  3. Paper 1 should not be written in a five-paragraph essay format.  There should be no introduction and no conclusion.  However, you should not turn in a single paragraph for your Paper 1.  Follow the simple rule that each paragraph in the series of paragraphs that will make up your essay should focus on a single specific topic or a single significant action.

  4. Although this is an informal essay, you must still follow basic grammatical rules.  Use complete sentences, even though they may contain contractions and slang.  Feel free to use dialogue if you wish to do so.

  ASSIGNMENT

Paper 1

  1. Write an informal essay of approximately three hundred (300) words using the Expressive Aim and the Mode of Description.

  2. Describe a person, a place, or a thing that has special meaning to you.  Concentrate on the details that separate this particular person, place, or thing from all others.

  3. Remember: the main idea of an Expressive Aim essay is a self-definition.  The focus is on the writer.  Therefore, your essay should be written using first person pronouns (I, me, my).  You should emphasize how the details you are describing make you feel.

  4. Also remember: this is an informal essay.  Use a conversational style and an informal paragraph structure (like in a friendly letter).  However, like the examples in the Packet, you should still use good basic sentence structure.

  5. If you have trouble coming up with a topic, take a look at the Suggested Topics list directly below the Assignment section.

NOTE: Paper 1 must be submitted and returned marked "Accepted" before you move on to Module 3.
