HLC Assessment Academy

The Student Learning Project Murray State College is embarking upon involves assessing classes developmental students will need to become successful in college. We plan on evaluating existing courses such as developmental reading, English and math, and reinstituting a basic science course. Currently, Murray State College uses the COMPASS® test to place students in developmental courses. We utilize the computer programs PLATO® and HAWKES to teach these courses in reading, math and partly in Basic English. We follow the students who pass the developmental classes to find out if they are indeed successful in subsequent courses such as composition I, college algebra, and biology. It is our goal to find a way to help developmental students find success in college. We would like to know if the computer programs currently used are beneficial to our students, or if it would be more advantageous to find different methods that would be more successful.
