Summer STEM Academy Planned

2/24/2014

Hands-on and fun STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities are planned for the 2014 MSC Summer College STEM Academy. Murray State College has once again partnered with area agencies, institutions, and businesses to provide a wide variety of experiences for the campers. This four-day residential academy designed for 8th and 9th grade students will be filled with Birds, Butterflies, Botany, & Biodiversity at the Wildlife Refuge; Fish & Turtles at the Fish Hatchery; Bio-Agriculture at Noble Foundation; Agriculture & Veterinary Technology Parasitology labs; Entomology; Orienteering; Low Ropes activities; Bridge Building/Bash Contest; Nutrition & Wellness; and a Career Moment at Miranda Lambert’s Tishomingo business! Applications are currently being accepted for the program. Eligible applicants must be entering the eighth or ninth grade in the fall of 2014. Selection will begin on April 1, but applications accepted after April 1 will be considered if camp participant slots open up. The STEM Academy will be held June 9 – 12.

The STEM Academy is a free camp designed to give participants a taste of college life. Campers stay in the Murray State College dorms, and experience college life first hand. College instructors as well as high school instructors help lead classes and activities and meals are taken in the Aggie Dining Hall. In addition to room and board, each participant will also receive a $100 stipend.

Last summer was the first STEM Academy held at MSC. Parents of participants say their children enjoyed the experience:

Thank you so much! My son had so much fun, and learned a lot from STEM this year. He is still talking about his experience.

[She] had such a great experience at MSC. Your STEM Academy was her favorite camp this summer. One of the many things she loved about Murray was that she was taught by actual professors and certified teachers, which led us to discuss the benefits of attending a junior college.
