Murray State College 2017 Summer STEM Camp Accepting Applications
Fifty eighth- and ninth- grade students from across Oklahoma will be selected to join the 2017 Murray State College Summer STEM Academy. The STEM Academy at Murray State College is a four-day residential camp that promotes student understanding of, along with interest in, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects through creative hands-on activities and local outings.
The camp is scheduled for June 5-8 on MSC’s Tishomingo campus and is free of charge. Applications can be found on the Murray State College website, and local school districts are scheduled to receive information about applications for the camp.
Campers will enjoy a full schedule each day, including trips to the Noble Foundation Academy and the Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge. Planned activities also include bridge building, Lego robotics, forensics, rocket launching and more.
“STEM subjects have always been important building blocks for students. We’ve been given a great opportunity by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education grant to expose pre-college students to new ways of exploring and learning more about these important subjects in a fun and creative atmosphere,” MSC President Joy McDaniel said.
Through classroom learning opportunities and multi-disciplinary studies integrated with technology, student campers will develop new skills and learn new ways of processing STEM subjects while learning about college life and making new friends.
“Our focus is on creating opportunities for students by exposing them to STEM subjects in a unique setting that takes into consideration a variety of learning styles and knowledge levels. STEM-subject mastery is very important in today’s job market, and we want to engage students early on in areas which will be important as they set their education and career goals,” Malynda Cobb, director of the STEM academy, said.
